The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Schools

Updated: Dec 11, 2019

Until mental health education is a mandatory aspect of all schools, teachers and administrators can work to promote awareness with their students.

Are you seeing the signs in your own classroom and how to handle student outbursts?

"Education professionals have recognized the impact that a student's mental health has on learning and achievement, and they realize that there's a great deal that can be done to help students with mental health issues."

WHY I CHOSE THIS ARTICLE

The issue resides in the lack of budget, support and awareness surrounding the problems that students, parents and teachers all face in the evolving years of Public Education. I chose this article not only for the very obvious reason being that a change has become necessary if we are to preserve the integrity of teaching and the minds of the future, but because something very real is happening. This growing problem is a result of the misconstrued understanding of emotions and their role in education. I have seen in my placement year the severe need for emotional support resources as well as education on basic emotional management and regulation skills. In conjunction with this is the alarming number of misplaced and neglected students due to their higher needs and lower academic performance. Many of the students who struggle with comprehension also struggle with emotional well-being and behavior in class. The two seem to have a direct correlation to their learning and achievement and its future in public education.
